Land Based Slots Vs. Online Slots
Land Based Slots
There are two different types of land based slot machines, class 2 and class 3, and there is a significant difference the way that they operate.
The player who tried to play at land based casinos would never realize the difference.
Class 3 slot machines
Also known as “Vegas Style” slots can be found in all large regulated markets, e.g., Vegas, Atlantic City, Reno. These slot machines work is with RNG (Random Number Generator), exactly like online slots.
A RNG is a program that generates thousands of numbers inside the machine, even when no one is playing at the machine. The split second the player hits the spin button, a number is generated, and that number represents certain slots symbols on the machine screen. Whether or not the player will win is determined when he hits the machine button. The symbols that are turning exactly like a land based slot machine are just for entertainment purposes.

Someone else hits the jackpot at your slot machine
This brings up a common fallacy about RNG slot machines. If you are playing at a land based slot machine and get up, and a minute later someone sits down and hits the jackpot on the very slot machine you were playing, it’s highly unlikely you would have hit the jackpot instead of him, if you kept playing. You would have had to hit the spin button at the exact same millisecond as the person who won.
Another significant feature of RNG slot machines, online or land based, is that on each spin you have the possibility of hitting the jackpot. You are no more likely to hit the jackpot on one spin than another. That means if I just hit the jackpot, on my next spin I have the same exact chance of hitting the jackpot as I did on the previous spin. All those theories about machines being “due to hit” are fallacies as well.
Of course, the slot machines are programmed to payback a certain percentage (see the slots payouts), they are. On land based casinos, each jurisdiction is different and the player should refer to the specific rules of his jurisdiction, but usually the lowest they can go by law is an 80% payback. On the other hand, online slots are programmed to payback much more payouts. However, even though they are programmed to payback a certain percentage over a large number of spins, the wins are not predetermined. This means that any player can win the jackpot any time, and at online slots, this could happen anywhere.
the machine will to hit the jackpot soon
This is another misconception, especially at land based slots machines. Many players believe that if they get a “near miss” to the jackpot, the machine is going to hit the jackpot soon. The number sequence for the jackpot and the “near miss” that was received may be thousands of numbers away. The machine is no more likely to hit the jackpot after the “near miss,” than if you didn’t get a “near miss,” the odds remain the same.
Class 2 slot machines
Those machines are only land based. Think of the cass 2 machine like a lottery ticket. The tickets are sold and there are a certain number of winning tickets. The same holds true for Class 2 machines. They are programmed to pay off at certain times.
Class 2 machines are based around the game of bingo and any player can recognize them by a little bingo card in the corner. For some reason, in the places that have class 2 machines, bingo is legal but regular slot machines are not. So the slot machine manufacturers came up with ways to get around it.
If you are a video poker player NEVER play class 2 machines. More on that at another time, but video poker no longer becomes a game of skill on class 2 machines.
When you are researching a casino find out what class machines they offer. I would advise you to play on RNG machines whenever possible. The fact that it is completely random takes away many of the conspiracies. Also, try to play at online slots. All of them are RNG machines.
